![]() I just ran across this photo in Facebook and thought it is so cool I wanted to share it here. It's my friend Daphne L. sailing on Pamlico Sound in North Carolina in late July of this year. Her speed as measured by GPS and certified was 25.5 mph. Notice how much cooler and faster she looks than the kiteboarder. BTW, Daphne just posted the gear she was using: 4.2 m^2 sail on a 90 liter board. The wind was blowing in the mid 20's. This video is of Anna expertly sailing my 148 L board with 8.0 rig. In the video below I demonstrate sinking the windward rail in order to sail/schlog a shortboard pretty steeply upwind.
The water level was going down rapidly, but was still 5 feet above normal. It was warm enough to sail w/o a wetsuit initially, although debris in the water kept snagging on my fin. I had to get in and out of the water so often that I went back to the house and got a weed fin and a shorty wetsuit. See pics. The videos below each show something DIFFERENT: 1) Finding the stick stuck to my fin, 2) cruising over the debris field, and 3) getting rid of a hitchhiking maple leaf and pivot jibing close to shore.
Yesterday the lake was still a good 10 feet above normal (my earlier estimates were off), which posed no problems for Jeff S.'s introduction to windsurfing. In fact, it was nice for us, since it meant that walking in the shallows was on grass rather than on rocks. Jeff (who made a contribution to WPSU) is already pretty much of a waterman (although not a sailor), and he picked up the basics of windsurfing extremely quickly. (Yes there were some thunderstorms, but we worked around them. And yes, the wind was so light it was sometimes hard to tell which way it was blowing -- but we still did OK because it's possible to sail with incredibly light wind.)
